Val Kilmer grew up in Los Angeles and began studying acting in grammar school. Though Kilmer quickly became a star on stage and screen, during filming of The Island of Dr. Moreau, Marlon Brando, one of Kilmer’s acting heroes, reportedly told Val Kilmer, “Your problem is, you confuse your talent with the size of your paycheck.” In his later years, Val Kilmer did regret some of his “bad boy” behavior.
While living in Los Angeles, I saw a “cattle call” advertisement for extras for a new movie about Jim Morrison and the Doors, starring Val Kilmer and directed by Oliver Stone. Hundreds of actors showed up. I wasn’t cast, but I saw the film, and though I felt the Doors movie fell short, Val Kilmer was brilliant as the charismatic but doomed singer, Jim Morrison. He also starred in Top Gun opposite Tom Cruise, and in Tombstone as an ill but lethal Doc Holiday.
Of all the actors who played Doc Holiday from Victor Mature to Dennis Quaid, Val Kilmer was clearly the best. With his intense gaze, pale complexion and slightly sinister Southern drawl, who can forget the suggestive line, “I’ll be your huckleberry.” It revealed the essence of the storied Doc Holiday.
One reviewer noted, “While Dennis Quaid, in Wyatt Earp, gave the most realistic portrayal of the dying dentist-turned-gambler/gunfighter ever recorded on film, Kilmer, relying on bloodshot eyes, an ambiguous sexuality, and a Brando-esque line delivery, literally steals Tombstone, and has become the ‘Doc’ everyone remembers.”
Val Kilmer’s performance is vivid and at times, disturbingly real. Tombstone is not perhaps as historically accurate as Wyatt Earp but a far more entertaining film, due in part to Kilmer’s memorable mesmerizing performance.
“The force of his will is the thing I remember about him,” says Taffy Brodesser-Akner, who wrote a profile of Val Kilmer for The New York Times Magazine in May 2020. “He was sure he was going to come back to his exact former self.”
One of the best movie shootouts is in the film, Heat. Val Kilmer is a bad guy starring alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Michael Mann’s tense thriller as the jaded criminal Chris Shiherlis, bringing an intensity to the role. Later in his career, he shared fond memories of the whole experience, telling Reddit users: “What an honor! Priceless experience…Loved every minute of it” (Val Kilmer).
Val Kilmer’s last movie role was in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, where he reprised his role as “Iceman”. His comeback was particularly poignant since in 2014, Kilmer had been diagnosed with throat cancer that altered his voice. Tom Cruise discussed the emotional impact of Kilmer’s return to the character, highlighting Kilmer’s powerful acting abilities. “I can’t tell you how much I admired his work, how much I thought of him as a human being and how grateful and honored I was when he joined Top Gun,” Cruise said of Kilmer, who played his rival Ice Man in Top Gun in 1986.

On April 1, 2025, Kilmer died of pneumonia in Los Angeles at age 65. Though Val Kilmer was never nominated for an Academy award, his film legacy will endure.
