U.S. stocks are climbing with markets worldwide after oil prices and yields in the bond market gave back some of their jumps from last week. The S&P 500 rose 1% Monday and pulled within 0.9% of its all-time high set last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 193 points, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.6%. They benefited from the price for a barrel of Brent oil falling back toward $100, while the 10-year Treasury yield dropped to 4.96%. The easing pressure helped indexes rise more than 1% around much of the world, from Germany to Hong Kong to South Korea.
A spokesperson for the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard warned that Iran would change its weapons, military tactics and targets if the conflict with the United States escalates. Meantime, the British military says an “unknown projectile” struck a tanker as it entered the Strait of Hormuz. Two crew members sustained minor injuries in Monday’s attack as the ship headed to port under its own power. The Israeli military remains on alert even as Israel shuts down Monday for the Jewish faith’s holiest day, Yom Kippur. The World Health Organization said 680 people were killed or injured over the course of a week in fighting across Yemen.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico have filed a lawsuit over being denied White House access. Reporters from the three news organizations were blocked from the White House on Saturday, a day after Trump said he was barring them because of reporting he deemed “fake news.” On Monday morning, CNN was removed from its pool duties, which are shared by the major networks. The actions were an escalation of Trump’s long-running efforts in the courts and through administrative action to restrict news coverage by journalists he finds objectionable. The Republican president had said Friday he would ban all three outlets because of coverage he disliked.
