Caden Christensen of the Idaho Falls Bandits fields a ball in the second inning Saturday during game 7 of the 2019 American Legion World Series between Shrewsbury, Mass. Post 397 and Idaho Falls, Idaho Post 56 at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.

The Idaho Falls Bandits are 2-0 at the American Legion World Series after beating Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, 4-0 on Saturday in Shelby, North Carolina.

Three Bandits pitchers combined to hold Massachusetts to three hits. Randon Hostert tossed the first 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Bruer Webster and Jaxon Sorenson.

At the plate, the Bandits scattered six hits and capitalized on three errors by Massachusetts. Kai Howell’s second-inning RBI single opened the scoring. Andrew Gregersen went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI to pace the offense.

Idaho Falls also put its gloves on display. Sorenson made a diving stop at first base to take away a hit in the first inning, shortstop Alex Cortez threw across his body to Sorenson to end the third inning, and Sorenson made a catch over his shoulder at second base in the fifth inning.

“We’re very versatile on defense and it shows,” Sorenson said in an American Legion press release. “In a game like this where the offense slumps, we need to get outs.”

The Bandits (58-6-1) finish pool play Sunday against North Carolina. The game starts at 5:30 p.m. MDT and can be watched on ESPNU.

With one more win, Idaho Falls will secure first place in the Stripes pod and a trip to Monday’s semifinals. The top two teams from both four-team pods earn berths in the semis.
