Anthony Volpe made his first career big league appearance at third base for the New York Yankees in the opener of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles. Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit a drive off the third-base bag and over Volpe in the ninth inning of New York’s 10-2 loss. That was the only ball hit toward Volpe. He started at shortstop for the first time since Aug. 1 in the second game and could appear at third again if the Yankees play on Sunday, when rain is forecast.

As soon as he reached base, Elly De La Cruz  to work becoming the fourth player in Cincinnati Reds history to hit at least 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in a single season. De La Cruz hit a two-run double in the third inning of Friday’s game at Toronto, then promptly stole third base on José Soriano’s next pitch. The two-time All-Star shortstop hit his 30th home run in Thursday’s 7-6 win at Atlanta.
