POCATELLO — The Idaho Museum of Natural History will host its 30th annual overnight Science Trek beginning on April 26 at 5 p.m. and concluding on April 27 at 8 a.m.

This annual event, which is open to all students in third through fifth grades, is a gateway for young scientists to learn more about the sciences and explore possibilities for a future career.

Pre-registration for those who are interested in attending the event is required and it’s open until April 8.

The Science Trek is an overnight adventure at the Idaho Museum of Natural History that explores many different aspects of of the sciences.

Students have the opportunity to work with scientists in anthropology, biology, botany, chemistry, geosciences, information technology, nuclear engineering, microbiology, physics and technology.

Students will also get to enjoy a science show, hands-on activities, a movie and pizza. Following the evening of exploration at the Idaho Museum of Natural History building, students will get to sleep among the Buzzsaw Sharks in the Buzzsaw Sharks of Idaho exhibit.

In addition, all students who attend the scheduled event will receive an official Science Trek 2019 T-shirt.

“We want to cultivate enthusiasm for science and show them what a career in STEM might be like,” said Virginia Jones, education specialist for the Idaho Museum of Natural History. “Interest in science tends to drop off after they reach 11 years of age. We hope that by nurturing their natural enthusiasm for science more students will choose to pursue careers in science.”

Spots for the planned event are limited. The cost is $45 per student. But if there are students who are are unable to pay, scholarships are available for the event. To apply for a scholarship, send an email to cindy.lunte@idahoptv.org.
