For 35 years, Cleon and Dixie Chapman have been decorating trees and gathering nativities — and whimsical Santas, snowmen and reindeer — to fill their tastefully restored Groveland homestead with holiday elegance.

It started with Dixie assisting with the Bingham County Christmas Tree Fantasy, which led to their own collection of trees. From the start, they decided to balance this Christmas forest with nativity scenes — with a goal of having more nativities than trees, Santas and reindeer. Then, as can happen, these two worlds collided with faith-based ornaments and gnomes snuggled next to nativities.

The symbolism of many common holiday decorations holds special meaning for the Chapmans. They decorate with only white lights and enjoy the reminder that Jesus is the light of the world. Likewise, they have a 3-foot-high full poinsettia in their joy room, the red leaves being a reminder of the sacrifice he made as the Messiah. Even the word “joy” — which appears throughout the house — is a reminder to them that joy comes through Jesus, others and you.
