POCATELLO — The opening and reception for the Idaho State University Eli M. Oboler Library photo exhibit “Business and Pleasure: An exhibit of Historic Pocatello, 1956-1959” will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Special Collections and Archives in the lower level of the library.

The exhibit, featuring the photography of former Idaho State College photographer Lloyd S. Furniss, is curated by Jeffery Howard and Career Path Intern student, Kelsey Baguley. This event is free and open to the public.

After working for the Idaho State Journal from 1951 to 1958, Furniss began a career as the Idaho State College campus photographer, a position he filled until 1983. The Lloyd S. Furniss Collection comprises more than 41,000 negatives, spanning 40 years and capturing the places, events and people of the Intermountain West and Pocatello, with its people figuring most prominently. Furniss’s family donated the collection to Special Collections and Archives following his death in 2011.

The twin themes of the exhibit, business and pleasure, attempt to capture multiple facets of Pocatello’s rich history. The photographs, taken between 1956 and 1959, display the buildings and businesses, many located in historic Old Town, constituting Pocatello’s economic and architectural past.

The exhibit also concentrates on recreational events such as parades, horse races, clubs and galas organized and attended by community members attempting to “live deep,” as Henry David Thoreau wrote, “and suck out all the marrow of life.” In short, the exhibit attempts to show where people made a living and just as importantly how they found pleasure in living.
