A man is in custody after he allegedly opened fire at a Washington State Patrol trooper and civilian Wednesday while traveling southbound toward Lewiston.

A 58-year-old Sequim, Washington, man is in custody at the Nez Perce County Jail on charges of aggravated assault after the incident that took place just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to an Idaho State Police news release.

ISP received a 911 call reporting the driver of a 2020 GMC Sierra was driving erratically traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 95 on the Lewiston Hill. He was reportedly “waving” a handgun through the truck’s sunroof, and the caller reported what they believed was the sound of gunfire coming from the truck while the vehicle was still traveling in Washington.

The driver of the Sierra also allegedly fired a shot at the caller’s vehicle at the base of the Lewiston Hill near milepost 313, the caller reported.

The Sierra was located in Lewiston, where an ISP trooper conducted a high-risk traffic stop, and the driver was taken into custody without further incident, according to the news release. U.S. Highway 12 at Third Avenue North in Lewiston was temporarily closed during the arrest and investigation.

While conducting their investigation, ISP troopers discovered the driver allegedly fired a shot from his vehicle while in Whitman County, Washington, and later shot toward a Washington State Patrol trooper near the Idaho border.

The suspect reportedly told ISP troopers he intentionally fired his gun, according to the news release. No injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation; the man currently faces charges in Nez Perce County, but additional charges may be filed by WSP or Whitman County at a later date.
