Prosecutors in California say they won’t pursue the death penalty for Rob Reiner’s son Nick in the killings of his parents. Nick Reiner was charged Dec. 16 with first-degree murder in the stunning killings of the couple, ages 78 and 70. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday it was deferring the death penalty decision. Nick Reiner has twice pleaded not guilty in the case. His former attorney said that under the laws of California, he is not guilty of murder. The district attorney said the maximum sentence Reiner will be eligible to receive if convicted will be life without the possibility of parole.

A man arrested in the hanging death of a 29-year-old Black woman in Mississippi has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. Tasia Fortune's body was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson last month, and police said Friday that they had charged 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, who is also Black, in her death. During Ratliff's initial court appearance Monday, he pleaded not guilty and the judge denied him bond. No motive has been given for the killing. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney told reporters last week that there was an “association” between the victim and suspect, but she didn't elaborate.
