BANCROFT — It’s often said that Friday the 13th brings nothing but misfortune.

When it comes to the North Gem football team, however, the opposite might be true.

The Cowboys didn’t allow any superstitions to play out as they met Watersprings-Clark on Friday.

Nothing but athleticism and consistent momentum led the Cowboys to a decisive 70-6 home victory.

North Gem more than stood their ground and were able to take full advantage of a number of early turnovers by Watersprings-Clark.

It says a great deal about the 10 players on the Cowboys’ roster who not only endure playing both sides of the ball game after game, but are also able to win big.

It’s a tough 48 minutes on the clock in any eight-man football matchup, but it’s even tougher for North Gem with only two subs on the sideline.

The Cowboys’ freshmen get thrown into varsity football and get lots of experience quick, often against much larger opposing players.

After a tough loss against Shoshone the week before, the Cowboys wanted to regain their focus and bounce back on Friday.

Cowboys head coach Corry Hatch said about Friday’s game, “These boys play so hard and do what is asked of them by the coaches. They play for their school, their families, for pride, and respect of the game and opponent. As a team we have to be better than our opponents’ roster. We don’t have depth, but we have heart. That showed up and showed out Friday night.”

The Cowboys posted some impressive statistics. They never turned over the ball, every one of their possessions resulted in a score, and every member of the team recorded a tackle.

Cowboy Craig Yost led the team in rushing with 188 yards and scored three touchdowns. His teammates Rusty Hatch and Lukky Welker tallied two touchdowns apiece.

The Cowboys nearly put up 400 yards of total offense during the game.

Defensively, North Gem held back Watersprings-Clark from scoring any touchdowns.

North Gem junior Haydn Frandsen was awesome on defense as he had three fumble recoveries, one of which he forced, as well as one sack.

The Cowboys (2-1, 1-0 1A Rocky Mountain Conference) will again play on their home turf this Friday against Garden Valley. Game time is 4 p.m.
