LOGAN, Utah — The Gate City Grays brought their regular season struggles into the postseason Monday night.

Their season now hangs in the balance after falling 5-3 to the Logan Royals in Game 1 of a Northern Utah League first-round playoff series.

The Grays (8-15) showed early fight, tying the game at 2-2 in the second inning when Chris Louie’s fielder’s choice brought home a run. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Logan answered with a decisive three-run third inning that proved to be the difference.

Gate City mounted a brief comeback attempt in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 5-3, but the Grays’ offense stalled from there. Limited to just five hits on the afternoon, Gate City couldn’t generate enough pressure to seriously threaten the Royals down the stretch.

The Grays are now in a must-win situation heading into Game 2 of the best-of-three series.
