After leading the Boise State football team to the College Football Playoff, Boise State coach Spencer Danielson is getting a pay raise.

Boise State announced that it had reached a five-year contract extension with Danielson on Tuesday, signing the coach through the 2029 season.

According to a contact sent out by Boise State, Danielson is set to make a base salary of $11 million over the five-year course of the contract. He will make $2 million this upcoming season, with a raise of $100,000 each year after. Under his previous contract, signed when Danielson was named the full-time head coach in December 2023, he was set to make a $1.2 million during the 2025 season.

“I truly believe it’s my calling to be the head coach at Boise State,” Danielson said in a release. “My family and I want to be here and serve Bronco Nation through our football program — not only with wins and championships, but as we help develop young men for the next stages of their lives. We are fired up for the future of Boise State football.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the contract.

Danielson was promoted from defensive coordinator to interim head coach in November 2023, after the Broncos fired former coach Andy Avalos with two games remaining in the 2023 regular season. He was able to rally the Broncos with wins over Utah State and Air Force and get them into the Mountain West Championship game.

Boise State beat UNLV in the title game and Danielson had the interim tag removed the next day.

In his first full season as the Broncos head coach, he led Boise State to a second straight Mountain West Championship and the team’s first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff. Boise State earned the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, where it lost to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.

He was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson and Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year awards.

Danielson has a 15-3 record as coach of the Broncos.

“Spencer has proven to be the right leader at the right time for Boise State football and our university as a whole,” Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey said in a statement. “We ask all of our staff to be bar raisers, and Spencer is a perfect example of what it means for Boise State and this community. I am proud to see him not only develop champions on the field, proven by this past year’s trip to the College Football Playoff, but also champions in life. We are grateful for him and his family believing in this place, and we are excited for What’s Next.”

With the success he’s had already as head coach, the 36-year-old Danielson figures to be a name thrown around for Power 4 head coaching openings, especially if the Broncos continue winning. While Danielson has not expressed any desire to leave Boise State, at least publicly, the new contract includes a $3.5 million buyout should he choose to leave Boise State prior to Feb. 28, 2026. That total will decrease each year over the course of the contact.

Boise State is set to open Danielson’s second full season as head coach on Aug. 28 at USF, with the home opener the following week against Eastern Washington.
