KETCHUM — Blaine County Sheriff’s deputies believe an insect may have contributed to a fatal rollover crash on Saturday that killed a 15-year-old girl.

The crash occurred not long after 4 p.m. on Highway 75 near Lake Creek Drive, just north of Ketchum, according to a news release from the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office. A 16-year-old girl was at the wheel of a 2001 GMC Yukon with two passengers, a 17-year-old boy and the 15-year-old girl who died. All three were from the area, according to the release.

Police believe the Yukon left the road over the right shoulder, returned to the lane, and rolled one-and-a-quarter times before it came to a stop on its passenger side in the northbound lane.

All three teens were rushed to the hospital, but the 15-year-old girl was unresponsive by the time first responders arrived. According to the release, she died of her injuries at the hospital.

Both the 16-year-old girl and the 17-year-old boy said there was a wasp or bee in the car, and said it might have contributed to the crash.

The girl is at least the second Idaho teen this year to die in a car crash in which a wasp or bee may have played a role. In May, 17-year-old Marissa Griffin died after a single-vehicle crash on Robie Creek Road. Griffin, who was allergic to wasps, was the passenger in the car driven by one of her friends, also a teenage girl. About 6 p.m. that day, 2 miles west of Highway 21, police believe a wasp flew into the 2004 Dodge Neon and in the teens’ effort to get the insect out, the car overturned into Robie Creek Road.

The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office’s release did not identify any of the teens involved in Saturday’s crash.
