MONTPELIER — After 10 years of ownership, Butch Cassidy Museum owner Radek Konarik is ready to pass the torch to someone else so he can spend more time with his family.

Konarik said he originally acquired the building on 833 Washington St. back in January 2015 to turn it into the museum it is today. He said he is proud of the work he and the community have done on the building in that time.

"It's an amazing masterpiece," Konarik said. "(But) I have a family and I want to focus on them. That's why it's for sale."

The museum is in the building that was the former home of The Bank of Montpelier, established in 1891 as the first chartered bank in the state. The bank is famous because of what happened there on Aug. 13, 1896. On that date the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch Gang robbed the bank.

One of the reasons the museum and its 1890s theme and artifacts are so popular is that it is in the only building in the U.S. still standing that was the scene of a robbery by Cassidy and his gang. There were no serious injuries during the robbery, though a bank teller got struck in the face by a member of the Wild Bunch. Cassidy made a clean getaway and only one member of his gang was ever arrested for the heist.

Konarik expressed gratitude for everyone who helped him build the Butch Cassidy Museum into what it is today. He said it is something that the whole community made possible.

"Montpelier is a wonderful community," Konarik said. "It's a great team. It's not just the effort of one guy. It's the whole community."

The Butch Cassidy Museum has had visitors from all over during the 10 years since it opened. They've had visitors from other countries who are interested in the history of the American West and in Butch Cassidy.

"It's a huge success for the community," Konarik said.

The museum is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and Konarik said that it sees between 5,000 and 7,000 visitors "from every corner of the globe" during that time every year.

Konarik hopes to sell the building to someone who will keep the museum open and continue to take care of it so it will still be an asset to the community.

"It's a unique experience," Konarik said about visiting the museum. "It's a unique building."
