Four people died and eight others were recently injured in five separate wrecks on East Idaho roadways, authorities said.

The first crash occurred around 6:44 p.m. on Thursday on Interstate 84 near Hazelton in Jerome County and resulted in the death of a 54-year-old Boise woman, according to Idaho State Police.

The three-vehicle crash unfolded when an 18-year-old Boise man was driving westbound in a 2008 GMC Yukon on Interstate 84 and struck the back of a 2019 Audi Q8 that was slowing for traffic, state police said. A 58-year-old Boise man was driving the Audi with a 54-year-old Boise woman as a passenger.

“The Audi was slowing for traffic in the left-hand lane when the GMC struck the Audi from behind,” state police said. “The GMC proceeded to veer into the right-hand lane where it struck the rear of a 2021 Toyota Prius that was being driven by a 78-year-old man with a 78-year-old woman passenger, both from Eagle.”

The GMC came to rest against a fence off the right-hand shoulder, state police said.

The driver of the GMC was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital, according to state police.

The occupants of both the Audi and Toyota were wearing seatbelts, said state police, adding that the driver of the Audi was transported by air ambulance to a local hospital. Both occupants from the Toyota were transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

The 54-year-old Boise woman that was a passenger of the Audi died at the scene of the crash, state police said.

The roadway was blocked for approximately three and a half hours to allow emergency responders to assist those involved and clear the scene.

Idaho State Police were assisted by Jerome County Sheriff’s Office, Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Transportation Department, Rock Creek Fire, Classic Air, Air St. Luke’s, Lifelight Network, and Magic Valley Paramedics.

The second crash occurred around 9:05 p.m. Thursday on Highway 20 north of Ashton in Fremont County and resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man according to state police.

The crash occurred after the 65-year-old man, who was driving a Toyota Matrix with two passengers, an 86-year-old woman and a 66-year-old woman, attempted to make a U-turn from the westbound shoulder and was struck by a UPS semi-truck, state police said. The semi-truck was driven by a 37-year-old male from Billings, Montana.

The driver of the Toyota was transported via air ambulance and his passengers were transported via ground ambulance to a local hospital. The semi-truck driver was not transported. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts. The 65-year-old man from XXX driving the Toyota Matrix later died as a result of his injuries while at the hospital.

Lanes were blocked for approximately three hours while emergency responders worked to assist those on scene and clear the area.

The third crash occurred around 3:40 p.m. Saturday at 664 West and 6000 South in Teton County and resulted in one juvenile dying and another being injured, state police said.

Two juveniles were traveling westbound on 6000 South near Victor, Idaho, on a red Suzuki King Quad 750 when they struck a tree. Both juveniles were ejected from the ATV.

One juvenile was transported to a local hospital via ground ambulance.

The other juvenile was transported to a local hospital by air ambulance.

One juvenile, Michael Hernandez Parra, 14, of Victor, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, authorities said. It’s unclear if Parra was driving the ATV or riding as a passenger.

The Idaho State Police were assisted by the Teton County Sheriff’s Office.

The fourth crash occurred around 3:05 p.m. Sunday and resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man from Walnut Creek, California after he crashed his motorcycle because of a puddle in the roadway near the interchange of interstates 84 and 86 near Burley, state police said.

Martin “Marty” Kaloostian was riding a BMW motorcycle eastbound on the interstate when he hit a puddle of water, state police said. He lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown into the median while the motorcycle remained on the interstate.

Kaloostian was wearing a helmet, but died at the scene as a result of the injuries he sustained.

Idaho State Police were assisted by the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office.

All four crashes remain under investigation by the Idaho State Police.

The final crash resulted in a local man being hospitalized after crashing his four-wheeler on a trail south of Pocatello.

The crash on Valve House Trail in the Mink Creek area was reported to the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office around 6:40 p.m. Sunday by a woman who had been informed about the incident by someone on the scene, authorities said.

Bannock County sheriff’s deputies immediately responded and were at the Valve House Trailhead in less than 10 minutes.

Bannock County Search and Rescue, a Pocatello Fire Department ambulance, U.S. Forest Service personnel and the Portneuf Medical Center emergency helicopter were all dispatched to the scene as well.

Because of the rough terrain, the deputies and other emergency responders had to get to the injured man on foot, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The man suffered serious injuries when his ATV overturned on the trail, authorities said.

Emergency responders put the man on a stretcher and used his own ATV to transport him off the trail to the waiting Pocatello Fire Department ambulance, which rushed him to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello..

An update on his condition was not available Monday evening but authorities said he was conscious and breathing when he was loaded into the ambulance.

The PMC helicopter landed on Mink Creek Road, causing the road to be temporarily shut down. But the decision was made to transport the man via ground ambulance instead.

The man’s name has not been released but authorities said he is from the Pocatello area and was with a group of people when the ATV crash occurred.
