New Plymouth Mayor Rick York is in jail for aggravated battery after shooting his son in the arm.

The Payette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 7 p.m. on Thursday night from York saying that he had shot his son, Jacob York, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Jacob York, 30, was taken to the hospital by his mother with non-life-threatening injuries.

“During the course of the investigation, we learned that an argument had taken place this evening and the shooting happened during that argument,” the news release said.

Rick York was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, and was scheduled to be arraigned on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Rick York is running for reelection for mayor against Lisa Binggeli. He was first elected in 2019.
