Maria Sanchez was given the Brandi Chastain Award by Santa Clara University, announced May 18 by the university.
The award is given each year to the school’s top senior female student-athlete. Sanchez led Division I with 16 assists as a redshirt senior during the 2018 season. In her two-year Broncos career, Santa Clara was 32-10-3 and made the NCAA tournament in both seasons.
Sanchez spent the first two years of her college career at Idaho State University.
The American Falls High School graduate was picked 15th overall by the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League College Draft on Jan. 10. She also plays for the Mexican Women’s National Team.
Chastain played at Santa Clara and was on the United States Women’s National Team from 1988-2004.
