POCATELLO — As Idaho State shuffled through drills Monday, starting quarterback Tanner Gueller mostly stood on the sidelines.

No need to sound the alarms, though. Gueller simply didn’t need the work.

Monday’s practice, the fourth of Idaho State’s fall camp at the ICCU Practice Fields, saw Gueller’s backups get a majority of the repetitions. Gueller has been at least a part-time starter since he was a redshirt freshman two years ago and is a lock to begin the 2017 season behind center. Behind him, however, is a depth chart chock-full of inexperience.

Redshirt sophomore Robert Kvinsland, sophomore transfer Michael Goggin and freshman Drew Cash have combined to throw three passes in a college football game. Kvinsland, who owns all three of those passes, is in his third fall camp with the Bengals. Bengals head coach Rob Phenicie said despite Kvinsland’s advantage in experience, the competition for No. 2 quarterback is open.

“We’re going to give it a week and see,” Phenicie said Monday. “We’re going to let them compete. Competition brings out the best in people.”

At the start of Monday’s practice, Kvinsland took second-team reps, while Cash was with the third-team offense. All three backups played with the first team throughout the day.

“It’s important to have that guy take some reps and see if he can move the ball with the ones as well as with the twos,” Phenicie said. “If he can move the ball with the twos, that’s really good. If he can move it with the ones, then you know he’s pretty good to being close to game-ready.”

Kvinsland, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander from Gig Harbor, Washington, completed 1 of 3 passes for 10 yards last season.

He and Tom Jewell fought for the No. 2 QB position last fall, but both were ultimately supplanted by wide receiver Trae Pilster.

Kvinsland and Gueller were ISU’s only quarterbacks this spring, allowing Kvinsland to get an ample share of the workload.

“I feel pretty comfortable,” Kvinsland said. “Still making some mistakes from being young and stuff. I feel like I’m getting better every day, and more comfortable in the offense.”

Goggin, who prepped at Lake City High School in Couer d’Alene, spent two seasons at Ventura College in Ventura, California, but did not see the field.

In 2015 at Ventura, Goggin backed up Ty Gangi, who took over starting quarterback duties at Nevada midway through last season. In 2016, Goggin backed up Jake Luton, who set school records and was named a Junior College All-American before transferring to Oregon State.

Goggin was coached by Van Troxel at Lake City. Now at ISU, Goggin is coached by Van’s son, Bengals offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Troxel.

“Excited about Michael Goggin,” Matt Troxel said Saturday. “Very familiar with Mike, just because he played for my pops up at Lake City. He’s a real smart kid that we’re trying to get to pick up the system.”

Cash, who signed with Idaho State in 2016 but didn’t report to camp until this fall, last played for Murray High in Murray, Utah. He completed 53.8 percent of his passes for 2,201 yards, 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions as a senior.

Troxel said Cash impressed him a few years ago when Cash attended a camp at ISU.

“Drew Cash is a guy that’s got a lot of ability,” Troxel said. “I’m just happy he’s here, finally, and that we get to work with him.”

It’s an unconventional quarterback battle, but provides a bit of offseason controversy nonetheless.

“You’re always one play away,” Goggin said. “You gotta be ready.”
