POCATELLO — Idaho State's quarterback depth is getting stronger, and incumbent starter Tanner Gueller may have some competition at the top.

Bengals head coach Rob Phenicie confirmed former University of Idaho and Coeur d'Alene High quarterback Gunnar Amos has transferred to ISU after being granted his release from the Vandals. Amos, a two-year starter for the Vikings, ended his prep career with 5,171 yards passing, 975 yards rushing and 67 touchdowns, according to the Spokesman-Review. Amos had scholarship offers from Idaho State, Weber State and Army but ultimately signed with UI.

Amos, son of CdA football coach Shawn Amos, enrolled at Idaho in January 2015 and saw his first action last season. In eight games, Gunnar completed 3 of 10 passes for 33 yards with one interception. The dual-threat signal caller also rushed six times for 22 yards and one touchdown.

The Spokesman-Review reported Amos was moved to safety this spring.

Phenicie said Amos will compete for playing time at quarterback for ISU. He will eligible immediately since he is transferring down from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

“He's going to compete with Tanner,” Phenicie said Friday after practice at the ICCU Practice Fields. “Everybody on the team is competing to be a starter. That's the way we do it. When you are on the field, you are trying to show us that you can start for us, and the best guy plays.”

Amos, a redshirt sophomore, gives the Bengals six quarterbacks in fall camp. Along with Gueller, ISU has redshirt sophomore Robert Kvinsland, sophomore Michael Goggin, freshman Drew Cash and freshman Anthony Posada. Kvinsland and Amos are the only QBs other than Gueller with college playing time, and there's no clear No. 2 behind Gueller. Amos is one of four ISU quarterbacks on scholarship.

Amos was recruited by Bengals offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Troxel three years ago. Phenicie said he and Troxel reconnected with the Amos family in May and entertained Gunnar's interest in transferring to ISU.

Phenicie also said Gunnar's release from Idaho was originally denied. The Vandals will be ISU's Big Sky Conference counterparts beginning in 2018, and college coaches frequently forbid players to transfer to programs within the same conference.

Phenicie expects Amos to report to camp sometime next week, giving him about half of fall camp to acclimate to ISU's system.

“We think he can handle what we're doing,” Phenicie said. “Matt's a great teacher. I know Matt will get him prepared.”

Idaho State's first fall scrimmage is Saturday at 1 p.m. at the ICCU Practice Fields. It is free and open to the public.
