POCATELLO – Century knows it can succeed and its record provides credence.

But Wednesday, it was not Century out there, but a squad that was overconfident or underconfident – depending on who you ask.

The result was being upset 2-1 by Canyon Ridge (6-5-1, 5-5-1 4A District 4-5) on senior day at home.

The Diamondbacks (8-2-2, 8-2-1 4A District 4-5) took a 1-0 lead into halftime before allowing two goals in the last 20 minutes of the match.

“There’s an arrogance about the way we play,” Century coach Rocky Rhoads said. “We’ve had enough success over the last few years that we think if we can just show up, we win the game. And it’s not that simple, obviously. There’s a lot of other talented teams, well-coached teams. And when we’re disjointed like this, things like this are going to happen”

Century struggled to get good looks at the goal, despite racking up free kicks in enemy territory and corner kicks.

In the last 10 minutes of the game, the Diamondbacks had two segments in which they had both a free kick and corner kick, but failed to tally a shot on goal either time.

Junior Kameron Murdock had Century’s best look at a goal down the stretch, and it was closely-contested and at a sharp angle. From the left side of the net, he took a shot that soared just above the crossbar in the 79th minute.

Century’s fate was sealed after Aidan Hofeldt’s desperation shot, from around 30 yards out, bounced into the arms of the Canyon Ridge goalkeeper in the final seconds.

After starting the season 7-0-2, the Diamondbacks have lost two of their last three games, falling at fellow 4A District 4-5 heavyweight Wood River on Saturday.

“We get into some good spots and then it’s like a carelessness in front of the goal,” Rhoads said. “We’re leaving a lot of opportunities out there and again, it’s an arrogance. It’s a carelessness. They just feel like we can create another chance. It’s no big deal.”

Canyon Ridge never allowed Century to get a rhythm Wednesday, playing stifling one-on-one defense and being unafraid to boot the ball out of bounds if there was a scent of danger.

The Diamondbacks did not get their first shot on goal until midway through the first half. Their only goal came on a free kick in the 34th minute. The Riverhawks unsuccessfully cleared the ball and Evan Yost scored from 15 yards away by kicking it between two opposing players and the diving goalkeeper.

Yost had his own thoughts on why Century is struggling.

“We’re just not in the mental state that we need to be in right now,” he said. “We’re just not believing that we’re as good as we are. … But we’ll get there. We just need to get our head in the game.”
