One thing the recent Hamas attack upon Israel and America’s 9/11 have demonstrated is that military and intelligence communities must be kept at the top of their game. Leadership failed the Israeli people, and one stubborn mule is doing his best to endanger America’s national security at a particularly perilous time.
That stubborn mule is Alabama’s Senator, Tommy Tubberville, a former football coach who has served in the U.S. Senate for 3 years. Known as “Coach” in certain circles, Tubberville has been objecting to approving top leadership appointments in the military for the better part of a year.
The Senate typically confirms over 30,000 military promotions annually, and they are done in large blocks for obvious reasons. However, almost 400 top leadership positions are being held in limbo due to Tubberville’s demand that the U.S. military change a policy compensating travel expenses incurred for personnel needing an abortion.
The majority of Americans support a woman’s right of choice, and so far every time the issue is put to a vote of citizens the right of reasonable choice prevails. However, Tubberville has taken it upon himself to impose his personal views at the expense of America’s military readiness. His actions reflect a callous disregard for our country’s safety and the men and women in uniform who faithfully serve and protect our nation.
How can one inexperienced senator cause so much turmoil? Without getting into the minutia of Senate procedures, under current rules it is possible for a single senator to object to approving nominations in bloc. The Coach, reputedly a former team player, has steadfastly done this for months, and his intransigence finally has Republican senators boiling over in frustration.
A recent Senate hearing had various Senators including Lindsey Graham and Dan Sullivan expressing their frustration at the damage Tubberville is doing to America and its military families. So far Republican senators have resisted joining with Democrats to circumvent this behavior apparently over concerns about changing Senate procedures and embarrassing one stubborn mule. They need to get past these trivial issues and put our nation first.
The Senate’s minority leader, Mitch McConnell, observed that blocking promotions is a bad idea that punishes people who don’t make policy. Our military is purposefully nonpolitical, but Tubberville’s misguided efforts are politicizing the military when viable options exist (like filing suit) to challenge the Pentagon policy without damaging national security.
It’s arguably unfair to call Tommy Tubberville a stubborn mule as these animals are considered fairly intelligent. However, intelligence isn’t at work when a rogue senator upends procedures utilized for over a century to keep America’s military fully ready. The Coach’s desperate “Hail Mary” strategy weakens our military while upending the lives of dedicated service members who deserve our respect and appreciation.
Idaho’s Senators, Jim Risch and Mike Crapo, should join the other Republican senators who have lost patience with Tubberville’s misguided antics. Adding their support to a Senate resolution ending the ongoing damage would garner respect from their constituents for putting the country’s needs ahead of partisan politics.
Dan Sullivan, Alaska’s Republican Senator, is a former military member and reservist who serves in the US Senate. He expressed his view of Tubberville’s actions and their detrimental impact upon America’s military readiness by stating, “How dumb can we be, man?”

With what the crazy leftist transgenda Biden administration has put into military leadership
Throwing a monkey wrench in the works is probably a good idea. I don't think this nation
Could stomach another Rachel Levine in charge of our military.
And you scumbags call yourself "Patriots".
Most patriots would be against allowing these transfreaks to lead our military. Do you think
That might have something to do with what
Little respect the US gets from China, the Saudis
