Jedd Greenhalgh performs at 7 p.m. Thursday for the Concert on the Quad, with the opener being the ISU Summer Marching Band at 6 p.m. The marching band concert is the culmination of the summer band camps and should be an enjoyable and energetic opening for the evening. Greenhalgh, who has performed at Idaho State University in the past, is a violinist who uses a synthetic sound machine to create original compositions played in the background as he plays the violin. He also can play the cello, piano and bass drum and is a DJ. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served while supplies last. Food is free for ISU summer students and $3 for the public.

“A Quiet Place” shows this Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Bengal Theater. This acclaimed movie stars Emily Blunt and John Krasinski in a tale of two parents who do what it takes to keep their children safe in a world full of creatures hunting every sound they can hear. Using sign language and taking precautions at all turns helps them get through life, but all it takes is one noise and everything can go wrong. “It is smart, it moves fast, it has a hugely satisfying ending,” writes the Associated Press, “and it deserves to attract a much broader audience than the usual horror film devotees.” (Rated PG-13) Admission is $3 for the public, $2 for ISU staff and free for ISU students with Bengal ID. The ISU Outdoor Adventure Center is going whitewater rafting this Saturday and Sunday. This is a beginner-friendly outing. Enjoy the thrill of white-water rafting or inflatable kayaking along the Hagerman stretch of the Snake River below the Salmon Falls dam. The river offers several Class II and a few Class III rapids. Camp the night at Thousand Springs, complete with showers. If you need more time in the water or want to relieve your tired muscles from paddling you can also soak in the hot pools. Space is limited to 10, so sign up soon. Cost is $70 for ISU students and $115 for other ISU-related people and includes rafting and inflatable kayak equipment, transportation, camping fees and four meals. ISU’s Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group (CW HOG) will host its 16th annual golf tournament Saturday at the Riverside Golf Course in Pocatello. The cost is $30 per person with a season pass or $50 per four-person teams. All proceeds will benefit the CW HOG program. Prizes will include mugs for the first-, second- and third-place teams and for the longest drive and closest to the pin. There will also be a raffle for a 2018 season golf pass and rounds of golf from local courses. Other raffle items will include a poker run and a lunch at the course. Monday night is Bengal Night at the zoo. ISU-related people with Bengal ID and their families can come to Zoo Idaho at 2900 S. Second Ave. in Pocatello between 6 and 8 p.m. for free admission. See all the wonderful animal exhibits that are right in our backyard. Make sure to stop by the ISU Alumni table outside the entrance to obtain your wristband for admittance.

Looking ahead to next week, Oskar and Julia are the headliners for the Concert on the Quad at 7 p.m. July 19 with opener Austin Coleman at 6 p.m. Oskar and Julia are a saucy, acoustic experience with harmonies reminiscent of how good music used to be. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served while supplies last. Food is free for ISU summer students and $3 for the public.

And Heartland Film Festival winner “Lean on Pete” will be shown July 20 at 5 and 7:30 p.m. in the Bengal Theater. Based on the best-selling novel, Charley Thompson struggles to find his place in the world until he begins working for a race horse owner and he meets thoroughbred Lean on Pete. But when the owner decides to sell Pete, Charley takes the horse and goes on a cross-country excursion to find a place for them both. The Chicago Sun-Times writes, “It’s hard to imagine anyone watching ‘Lean on Pete’ and not rooting hard for Charley’s wish to come true. ...
