POCATELLO — Pocatello-based flute choir Suite 212 is presenting its 2026 spring concert on March 9 at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, located at 200 N. 15th Ave. in Pocatello. The concert is free and open to all ages.

The choir will perform a variety of flute choir pieces with an international “flavor” to celebrate the coming spring season. The concert opens with Concerto in G Major by German Baroque composer, Georg Phillip Telemann, as arranged and edited by Ervin Monroe. Following this, the choir will perform "A Kiss In The Dark" by Victor Herbert as arranged by Bill Holcomb. This selection is a famous waltz song from the 1922 Broadway musical comedy Orange Blossoms. A favorite of the choir also to be performed is "Souvenir de Porto Rico" by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, considered by many to be one of the most important American composers in the 19th century. This arrangement, of one of his most popular Caribbean-influenced piano pieces, is scored for piccolo, C-flute, alto and bass flute.

The choir will also perform two movements of a new piece, "The Mayflower Suite" by Catherine McMichael, a favorite composer of the group. The two movements to be performed are "The Pilgrim" and "1620." The movement "1620" is a particularly joyful piece, set in a neo-Baroque contrapuntal style. Following this is "Loch Lomond," a popular folk melody of Scotland that can be heard in many versions, renditions and interpretations. The choir will perform Ervin Monroe’s Theme and Variations of "Loch Lomond." The tune is from a legend that involves two soldiers in the army of Bonnie Prince Charles who were captured in the unsuccessful uprising of 1745. The concert will conclude with "Simple Gifts," a Shaker hymn arranged by Frank J. Halferty. The song was largely unknown outside Shaker communities until Aaron Copland used its melody for the score of Martha Graham’s ballet, "Appalachian Spring," first performed in 1944. Sarah Jackson, the choir’s director invites everyone to take a break and come enjoy the sweet sounds of Suite 212.

The members of Suite 212 are Kathy Albano, Elizabeth Bolinger, Kristina Cochrane, Sarah Jackson, Celia Kampwerth, Jill Kirkham, Terry Lewis, Barbara Shaw and Charity Staggs.

Suite 212 includes piccolo, C flutes, alto flute, and bass flute, and was started in 2001 by former Pocatello resident, teacher and National Flute Association lifetime achievement award recipient, Patricia George.
