POCATELLO — The Annual Jim Robison Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Pocatello Knights of Columbus, was once again a big hit in raising funds for local charities.

“The day was such a success,” said Kerry Hennessy, one of the tournament organizers. “It amazes me how much support we get for this tournament.”

The tournament, which was held Saturday, featured 33 teams competing in a four-person scramble. In addition to the entry fees, the tournament raised funds through sponsorships of local businesses. All the proceeds go to special causes, including the endowment of a scholarship fund to the Holy Spirit Catholic Grade School.

Other causes that have benefited from the tournament over the years include helping a local pediatric clinic obtain a sports vision and hearing screener. The Knights have also donated proceeds from the tournament to help the local Veterans Home, Special Olympics, C.W. HOG (an organization that provides outdoor experiences for the handicapped) and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The tournament is named in honor of the late Jim Robinson, a member of the Pocatello Knights of Columbus, who was an integral supporter of the tournament over the years. His widow, Virginia, hit the ceremonial tee shot to begin the tournament this year.

“Again, she was quite moved by the support of all the players in attendance,” said Hennessy.

The winning team was the foursome of Ricky Schmidtgall, Junior Wayas, Cory Stewart and Douglas Guildinger, with a total score of 240. In second was the team of John Azzola, Lisa Higbee, Chris Baker and Will Cleary at 242. Third was the team of Todd Johnson, Jason Cook, Ric Benedetti and McKenzie Ray Losee at 247.

The men’s closest to the pin was T.J. Drake, and long drive was by Wiley Losee. On the women’s side, closest to the pin was Thais Ayre, and longest drive was by LuAnn Losee.

The tournament was held at Pocatello’s Riverside Golf Course. Play was halted for a while as a thunderstorm passed through the area near the end of the tournament. After the tournament ended, all the competitors were treated to a savory meal at the Holt Spirit Catholic Community Gym, where they could bid on a great selection of raffle prizes. All participants received a gift bag at registration.
