SHELLEY — The North Bingham County District Library is forming a Dungeons and Dragons group to play through March on Wednesday nights, beginning on March 4 at 6 p.m. Anyone 18 years and older can join the fantasy adventure held at the library at 197 W. Locust in Shelley.

First step is to decide what character you want be in this role-playing game. Each species comes with inherent abilities. For instance, dwarves are sturdy, humans are versatile, elves are dexterous and magical, and gnomes are clever. Then there are sub—characteristics. You can be a lawful thief or an unlawful thief — or dwarf, elf or human.

For help navigating all the choices, talk to librarian Janell Peterson on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and she will help you learn about the characters and their special powers and limitations. The very last chance to create a character will be just before the first game on March 4.

Once you choose your character, all that remains is to come and learn. No experience is needed — and no costumes are needed either. The dungeon master will direct the evening’s play. They are the one who creates a fantasy world and the mission to be accomplished — complete with opponents to battle or outwit, mysteries to be solved and obstacles to surmount.

For two hours, you will be guided by the DM, who will present action choices for each member on the team. When you make your choice, you roll certain dice to determine what happened. Did you weaken your opponent, find an unseen potion or escape unseen?

D&D was created and designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson over 52 years ago. It is considered the grandfather of modern role-playing games and yet remains the best-known and best-selling role-playing game in America today. This enduring game has won many awards and has spread around the world.
