POCATELLO — The ICCU Field House at the Mountain View Event Center is expected to open in mid-February.
Shelton Robinson, executive director of the Mountain View Event Center, said the field house is expected to open Tuesday, Feb. 17, pending the installation of turf.
“It will be a 20,000-square-foot expansion next to the Mountain View Event Center,” Robinson said. “It will have a separate entrance and its own lobby.”
The field house will primarily serve indoor sports such as baseball, softball and soccer. Local sports teams will be able to use it for both practice and games.
“It’s open to clubs, high school teams or any local organization,” Robinson said. “There’s batting chambers for baseball and softball. We hope to attract new events and give current events room to expand.”
The project took about nine months to build and was largely funded by ICCU, which secured naming rights for the facility. Robinson said the field house will still be managed and marketed by the same entity as the Mountain View Event Center.
Robinson said the new field house addresses a long-standing need in the community. For years, the Mountain View Event Center, located at 1567 Way to Grace Ave. on the city’s northeast side, has hosted soccer and baseball activities, but the space wasn’t designed for those sports.
“For years we’ve done soccer and baseball inside Mountain View,” Robinson said. “It’s not the ideal facility.”
The new state-of-the-art facility will provide young athletes with appropriate space to practice and compete. Robinson said the community response has been strong, with people already inquiring about reserving the space.
“We’re fortunate to have a big customer base with all the sports,” Robinson said. “We’re hoping to have soccer tournaments and things like that. We’re happy with the interest it has so far.”
