Six runs in the seventh inning nearly saved the Gate City Grays’ season.

But just like so many times before this season, they ultimately fell short in a 9-8 season-ending loss to the Logan Royals in Game 3 of the Northern Utah League playoffs Wednesday night.

Gate City (9-16) started strong in the first inning when Trayson Kostial and Mario Landeros each drove in runs to give the Grays a 2-0 lead. The early advantage proved short-lived, however, as Logan responded with nine unanswered runs over the next five innings to take control of the game.

But even while trailing 9-2 heading into the final inning, the Grays didn’t quit, mounting an impressive comeback that nearly changed both the game’s and their season’s outcome.

Brody Burch started the rally with an RBI triple to left field. Tyler Vance followed with an RBI single and Brayden Pieper added a two-run single of his own. Thomas Anderson then delivered another two-run hit to bring the Grays within one run at 9-8, putting the potential winning run at second base.

But the late charge ended when Burch grounded out with two runners on base, ending both the game and Gate City’s season.

It ends what has been one of the worst seasons in the organization’s history.

In addition to just nine wins, the Grays recorded back-to-back wins only once, and that didn’t come until the second-to-last game of the regular season. They were also outscored by opponents 186-158 with nine losses by six or more runs.
