The Gate City Grays (4-9) of the Northern Utah League have found their offensive rhythm at home lately, going 2-2 in their last four games at Halliwell Park with a pair of mercy rule victories.

The Grays delivered their most dominant performance of their recent homestand July 5, crushing the Logan Royals 12-2 in a mercy-rule shortened five-inning affair. After a scoreless first inning, both teams traded runs to create a 2-2 deadlock in the second before Gate City exploded for five runs to seize control.

Thomas Anderson sparked the decisive rally with a clutch two-run single, and the Grays never let up from there. Gate City outscored Logan 10-0 over the final three innings to put the game away early.

Tyler Vance paced the offensive onslaught with three hits in four at-bats, while Anderson and Trayson Kostial each contributed two hits and drove in two runs. Starting pitcher Trem Tolman dominated on the mound, scattering three hits across four innings while striking out five batters to earn the victory.

A week earlier on June 28, Gate City split a doubleheader with the Providence Wolverines, capturing the opener 14-4 before dropping the nightcap 9-3.

The Grays came out swinging in Game 1, building a commanding 6-0 advantage behind Kostial’s three-run blast in the second inning. Gate City put the game away with a five-run fifth inning that triggered the mercy rule, with Kostial delivering the knockout blow on a two-run double.

Kostial turned in a flawless performance at the plate, going 3-for-3 with six RBIs to lead all hitters. Hudson John chipped in with two hits and two RBIs, while Tolman earned his second win of the homestand by fanning six batters.

The second game told a different story as Providence jumped ahead 5-0 through three innings. Gate City battled back to within two runs at 5-3 when Brayden Pieper drove home a run with a single, but the Wolverines pulled away with four unanswered runs to seal the victory.

The homestand began on a sour note June 27 with a crushing 7-6 defeat to the Boise State Club team that slipped away in dramatic fashion. With the bases loaded and John at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, Gate City appeared poised to complete a comeback victory before the game ended on a foul tip strikeout.

Matt Azzarano provided the bright spot in the loss, collecting three hits including a double in four trips to the plate.
