In his article in the July 2 edition of the Idaho State Journal, Bill Brydon was right on. Where, oh where, is the SBOE? Now the Sunday, July 9, edition has a huge "optimistic" Idaho State University article mostly about enrollment and budget problems.

The article, which quotes Dr. Kent Tingey, Dr. Laura Woodworth-Ney and Dr. Arthur Vailas, left many unanswered questions and much room for discussion. I want to comment on only a couple of sections, both having to do with the laying off of K.C. Felt as a means of reducing the budget shortfall.

As many readers know, K.C. served Idaho State in many capacities for 24 years, ending up as the Alumni Director. Any job she did for ISU was done well, was done happily and done for the good of ISU. She served her alma mater with dedication and pride.

Now consider, as a money saving gesture, if Dr. Vailas were fired instead of K.C. It would have saved four and a half times as much money and would have rid ISU of possibly the worst president the university has ever had.

Thinking about this on a cost-benefit basis, because K.C. did at least 10 times as much good for ISU each year of her lifetime's dedication to the university as Dr. Vailas has ever done, laying off Dr. Vailas instead of K.C. would have netted ISU about $3.5 million per year in benefits.

Or put another way. The difference between K.C's and Art's yearly salary is a little more than $300,000. K.C. benefited ISU at least 10 times as much as did Dr. Vailas. On a cost benefit basis therefore, ISU would have saved $3 million a year by firing him and keeping her, i.e. $3 million in the 10 years that Dr. Vailas  has been trying to destroy the university.
