POCATELLO — A 35-year-old local man was arrested Wednesday after police say he struck and significantly injured a motorcyclist on the city’s north side while driving under the influence.

Corey Esteven Gunn, of Pocatello, has been charged with one count of felony aggravated driving under the influence following the crash, which occurred around 8:20 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 30 and Philbin Road, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal obtained Thursday.

The motorcycle rider, Gregory Hamann, 42, of American Falls, is currently listed in critical condition at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, according to his family.

Pocatello police were dispatched to the area of Highway 30 and Philbin Road for the report of the truck versus motorcycle crash and upon arrival found Hamann lying face down in the roadway with blood coming from his ears and mouth, police said.

Hamann was unconscious but breathing before he was placed on his side in the recovery position, according to the report. Gunn was seen rendering aid to the man and was covered in his blood, police said.

Officers then cut off Hamann’s leather jacket, shirt and gloves to search for bleeding injuries, the report says.

Emergency medical responders arrived on scene and placed Hamann in a neck brace before transporting him to PMC via ground ambulance, police said.

Another officer then completed standardized field sobriety tests with Gunn, which he failed to complete in a satisfactory manner, according to the report.

Police say Gunn completed breathalyzer tests that showed his blood alcohol content was .115 and .128 percent, both of which were above the legal limit of .08 percent to safely operate a motor vehicle in the state of Idaho.

Before providing the breath sample, Gunn was asked what happened that day and he told police that the sun was so bright that he could not see the motorcycle until he was right on it, police said. Gunn told officers that he was headed north on Highway 30 and the motorcycle was stopped at the red light at the Philbin Road intersection when he rear-ended Hamann while traveling about 45 mph, the report says.

Gunn was first taken to the Pocatello Police Department where his blood was drawn before being transported to the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

He appeared in front of 6th District Magistrate Judge Aaron Thompson for an arraignment hearing Thursday, during which prosecutors asked that his bond be set at $50,000.

Gunn is due back in court on June 12 for a preliminary hearing that will involve local prosecutors attempting to prove there is enough evidence to elevate his case from the magistrate to district court level for trial.

If convicted of the felony aggravated DUI charge, Gunn faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
