IDAHO FALLS — A tip from the public resulted in police arresting a homeless man for allegedly robbing an Idaho Falls bank on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday night police reported that they arrested 36-year-old Craig Blankenship and charged him with felony robbery. Police said Blankenship, who's homeless but lives in Idaho Falls, is the individual seen on security camera footage robbing The Bank of Commerce at 1730 W. Broadway St. around 9:30 a.m.

Police have not said where they took Blankenship into custody — only that a tip from the public enabled officers to locate and apprehend him on Tuesday evening. 

Authorities said Blankenship walked into The Bank of Commerce on Tuesday morning and "gave bank tellers a note demanding money."

The tellers "gave (Blankenship) an undisclosed amount of money" and he then left, police said.

Police said they believe Blankenship likely changed his clothing after leaving the bank.

Police described Blankenship as being "armed" in a press release but they never identified his weapon.

Authorities praised the media and public for the fact Blankenship has been taken into custody.

"Help from the public is absolutely essential to effective community policing," said Idaho Falls Police Chief Bryce Johnson. "We want to thank the people of Idaho Falls and our media partners for the prompt attention in sharing this information."

If convicted of felony robbery, Blankenship faces up to life in prison.
