POCATELLO — The Idaho State-Civic Symphony will perform its season finale Friday, closing out its “Creative Courage” season.

The performance, titled “Brahms Requiem, A Human Requiem,” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, at the Stephens Performing Arts Center, according to a news release from the symphony.

The symphony will be joined by the ISU Concert Choir and Camerata Singers, directed by Jeffery Francom, and the ISU Treble Choir, directed by Geoffrey Friedley. Nell Flanders will conduct the symphony.

Two soloists — baritone Simon Barrad and soprano Cara Gabrielson — will perform during the third and fifth movements.

“Brahms Requiem” explores the emotions surrounding grief and remembrance. Composed by Johannes Brahms following the deaths of his mentor, Robert Schumann, and his mother, Christiane Brahms, the requiem moves through those themes via triumphant horns, lonesome soloists and gentle strings.

The piece begins with the words “blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Unlike most requiems, it offers comfort to mourners rather than absolution for sinners, ending with the full choir singing “as one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you” — Brahms’ final goodbye to his mother.

Current season ticket holders may renew their subscriptions at the concert or by contacting the Stephens Performing Arts Center Box Office. New subscribers can purchase season tickets in June.

ISU students and Shoshone-Bannock Tribe members receive free admission with a valid ID at the Box Office.
