OVID — A wheel that came off a Jeep Wrangler struck an oncoming Hyundai Elantra on State Highway 36 Saturday night west of Ovid, causing the car to careen off the road and hit a tree.
The accident near Bear Lake left all three occupants of the Hyundai hospitalized and shut down Highway 36 for several hours.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when the front wheel of a westbound 2012 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 22-year-old man from Idaho Falls came off the vehicle, state police said.
The wheel then struck an eastbound 2016 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 21-year-old man from Lovell, Wyoming, with two 22-year-old female passengers from Montpelier, state police said.
The impact sent the Hyundai off the roadway and into a tree.
All three occupants of the Hyundai were taken to Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier by ground ambulances and then they were airlifted to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello via emergency helicopters.
No updates on their conditions have been provided.
The driver of the Jeep was not hospitalized.
The crash blocked all lanes of Highway 36 for about six hours west of Ovid, a small community north of Bear Lake.
The names of those involved in the accident haven’t been released. State police said everyone was wearing a seat belt.
The incident remains under investigation by state police.

If you are implying this is somehow related to CR reliability ratings, you aren’t the sharpest tool in the shed or very mechanically inclined. At least Tundra engines aren’t imploding, oh wait…
