NAMPA — A fake, lifelike body hanging from a tree outside a Nampa house prompted a passerby to call police. 

The Halloween decoration on South Elder Street, even though it had a pumpkin for a head, disturbed the caller. Another decoration depicted a body hanging upside down from a tree in black plastic. 

In response to the Oct. 26 call, a Nampa police sergeant did check out the offending fixtures, classifying them as Halloween decorations, Nampa Police Department spokesman Sgt. Tim Riha said. 

"It may offend somebody, but there’s not a lot we can do about it,” he said.

Police don't have the authority to tell people to remove decorations, Nampa Police Lt. Jason Kimball said. He said he also drove by a Confederate flag in someone's yard, which could be "offensive to a lot more people" than the Halloween decor, but still police won't seek removal.

Officers could ask someone to take down decorations, Riha said, but because there's no law to enforce it, officers generally don't ask.
