POCATELLO — The annual Bannock Civitan Indoor Putt-Putt tournament will be held this weekend, where over 500 local residents will sink a few holes and down a bevy of brews with all proceeds going towards a variety of good causes.

For decades area residents have donned eccentric and oftentimes hilarious costumes to hit a number of local bars, relying on their dedicated driver to chauffeur them around as they attempt to survive a boozy blitzkrieg of mini-golf.

This Saturday 99 teams comprised of five players each will attempt to putt through 18 holes at 18 bars beginning at 10 a.m. in a race to finish before the tournament ends at 4:30 p.m. A total of five teams will begin at each of the respective bars where they will receive their starting packets and scorecards.

“They'll hit pretty much all the bars downtown and their scorecard shows which bar they go to next,” said Claudia Allen, a Bannock Civitan member who helps organize the event. “At the starting bar is where they can buy their raffle tickets and their mulligans. Each person putts, all five on their team, and we take the best putt at the end of the event. We're done at 4:30 whether you're done or not and everybody goes back to Center Street Clubhouse. They’re our host bar and that's where all the rapid prizes will be. That's (also) where we'll announce the golf pass winner and first, second and third place (winners).”

The Bannock Civitan Club is probably best known for its Revive at 5 summer concert series and thanks to events such as Revive and the annual Indoor Putt-Putt tournament the organization donates a large amount of money every year to assist individuals with disabilities and to help the local community.

“We do a lot of projects for the community,” Allen said. “We provide all those backpacks to all the foster kids in six counties every year. We're the ones that put in the playground at Lookout Point. We paid for that playground equipment.”

This year the Bannock Civitan Club is hopeful it can donate a large portion of its generated funds to expand the Idaho Falls nonprofit Champ’s Heart to Pocatello. The nonprofit provides equine therapy for children with disabilities.

The Civitan club charges $200 per team to compete in the putt putt tournament and each participating bar pays $50. Along with donations and raffles, the putt putt event generates around $25,000 to $30,000 for the club's charity efforts. The money helps aid in the club's service projects and assists in helping fund a variety of positive community causes such as New Day Products.

The annual mini-golf affair also helps spur the local economy, encouraging the players to eat and shop in downtown businesses.

“It's just a good time for everybody and we love doing it because that's what we're all about — community support and raising money for our projects,” Allen said.
