A false report of gunfire led to a scare at Idaho State University in Pocatello on Thursday, while a report of a man with a holstered handgun led to multiple schools in Idaho Falls being placed on lockdown on Friday morning.

However, police said both cases turned out to be mere false alarms.

In the first incident, several police units responded to Idaho State University on Thursday afternoon after professors reported hearing “popping sounds” and seeing flashes of light that could have been gunfire.

The sounds and possible muzzle flashes were reported around 1:45 p.m. by a group of three ISU professors who were walking on the Quad, ISU reported.

The professors contacted the Pocatello Police Department, saying that they heard the noises and then saw the flashes of light coming from the Fine Arts Building next to the Student Union, according to ISU.

Several Pocatello police officers responded to the campus, and with help from ISU Public Safety, an investigation was launched.

ISU issued an alert to everyone on campus around 1:55 p.m. that officers were responding to the Fine Arts Building because of the “popping sounds,” adding that security camera footage was showing nothing unusual.

At 2:10 p.m. ISU issued a second campus-wide message stating that “the Fine Arts Building and surrounding areas were checked and no threats were found. All normal activities can resume.”

ISU officials said the incident did not result in the campus being placed on lockdown and it’s unclear what the professors actually saw and heard.

Pocatello police said their investigation into the incident did not result in any evidence of gunfire being found on the ISU campus. But police said any time citizens believe they’re seeing something suspicious contacting law enforcement is the proper thing to do.

The second incident occurred less than 24 hours later in Idaho Falls.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the area of Ammon Road and Woodside Drive at approximately 10 a.m. to a report of a suspicious male who was reported to be wearing what looked like a holstered handgun.

The large number of schools in the immediate area of the sighting led to Bonneville School District 93 and the deputies stationed inside the schools locking the schools down.

Bonneville High School, Technical Careers High School, Bonneville Online High School, Rocky Mountain Middle School, Summit Hills Elementary School and Discovery Elementary School were all affected by the lockdown.

Deputies located the male suspect. However, investigation determined that no criminal activity had taken place and the suspect posed no threat.

The school lockdowns were lifted at approximately 10:45 a.m.

“The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the patience of students and parents while this event was investigated,” a news release from the sheriff’s office said. “The lockdown process and safety protocols of School Dist. 93 are in place for these types of situations and emergencies, and we appreciate the public being aware and reporting suspicious activity. This enables the Sheriff’s Office and School District to react quickly and efficiently to keep our schools safe.”

The sheriff’s office also encourages the public to report any suspicious activity.
