People are rallying around the families of two young cousins who were killed in a UTV crash north of Salmon over the weekend.

Lydia Chaffin of Kearney, Nebraska, and Avery Kohl of Brigham City, Utah, both died in the incident, Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner confirmed on Wednesday.

The girls were 10 years old. Online GoFundMe accounts have been set up for each of them.

The account for Kohl is raising money for a humanitarian fund in her name.

“One of Avery’s final assignments in 4th grade was writing about what she wanted to do for her life’s work.

“She took the assignment very seriously, and, after much contemplation, finally decided that she wanted to be a humanitarian so she could, in her own words, “Help people!”, according to www.gofundme.com/avery-kohl-humanitarian-fund. “She wanted to make a difference by helping people all over the world. We are currently filing paperwork to set up the Avery Kohl Humanitarian Fund to fulfill that vision and your donations provide the seed money for this fund.”

As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, people had donated more than $9,300 toward that goal.

The website says Kohl had a zest for life and she radiated love and kindness. She was also a dancer, artist and designer.

“She loved her family and was a true friend to everyone who had the pleasure to meet her,” according to the website.

The Lydia Jane Chaffin Memorial Fund describes Chaffin, the middle child of five, as a girl who took good care of her mind and body and paid attention to the spiritual things she learned at church, from the scriptures and from her family.

“Lydia’s favorite part of life, in spite of all the interests and experiences she relished, was her family,” according to the GoFundMe site, www.gofundme.com/lydia-jane-chaffin-memorial-fund. “She recently told her sister: ‘I love my family so much. I don’t wish for anything else!’’

The memorial fund will be used to help Chaffin’s family with expenses.

More than $12,600 had also been donated to that account as of Thursday afternoon.

Both Chaffin’s and Kohl’s funeral services will be under the direction of Gillies Funeral Chapel in Brigham City, Utah.

Chaffin’s funeral will take place today at 11 a.m. at the Mountain View LDS chapel located at 105 W. Fishburn Drive in Brigham City. Kohl’s will be held at the same location on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The cousins will both be buried at the Brigham City Cemetery on Saturday.

Both Chaffin and Kohl were killed in a UTV crash over the Memorial Day weekend. Five others were also injured in the incident but additional details about their names, ages and current conditions have not been released.

Sheriff Penner did say Wednesday that he was not aware of any other fatalities that had resulted from the accident.

The UTV was carrying seven people when the crash occurred on Lick Creek Road, north of Salmon, according to Lemhi County sheriff’s officials.

Penner said they are still investigating the incident and he did not release any additional details on Wednesday.

He did urge people to be careful while they’re out recreating this summer and to operate equipment appropriately.

“Be safe,” he said.
