The local man who’s suspected of robbing a Pocatello credit union is behind bars after leading state police on a high-speed chase with a child in his vehicle, crashing into a patrol car and then trying to flee on foot, authorities said.

Rulon J. Olson, 34, of Idaho Falls, was arrested Friday morning following the pursuit incident and is currently being held at the Bonneville County Jail on charges of felony eluding, felony child endangerment, felony assault on a law enforcement officer, damage to state property and resisting and obstructing officers.

Those charges stem from the chase incident that began around 10:30 a.m. Friday after state police pulled over Olson for a turn signal violation on Highway 20 near Old Butte Road in Idaho Falls.

Upon making contact with Olson, state police realized he was wanted on warrants related to the robbery of the Mountain America Credit Union in Pocatello on Nov. 7. Olson then reportedly sped away from the traffic stop in his Mazda sedan and the high-speed pursuit ensued, authorities said.

State police said Olson had two passengers in his car, a 26-year-old woman and a child.

During the chase, Olson rammed a state police patrol car but no troopers were injured, authorities said.

Olson’s car was eventually stopped when state police used one of their vehicles to nudge its back wheels in what’s called a PIT maneuver, causing his car to spin out of control and come to a halt.

Olson then exited his car and ran into a nearby field where state police quickly arrested him, authorities said.

The woman and child who were Olson’s passengers suffered minor injuries during Friday’s incident. They were transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and released.

Pocatello police said they had identified Olson as the suspect in the robbery of Mountain America Credit Union on the 1000 block of Yellowstone Avenue and issued warrants for his arrest prior to Friday’s incident.

Police said Olson entered the credit union around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 and demanded money from a teller. After leaving the credit union with the stolen cash, Olson ran in a northerly direction and entered the passenger side of a parked Chrysler 200 sedan, police said.

The car then left the area but was located in Idaho Falls by police later that night. The adult male driver of the car was interviewed by police but is not facing any criminal charges at this time, authorities said.

Police said Olson did not display any weapons during the credit union robbery. The amount of money that he allegedly stole has not yet been released.

Pocatello police said Olson will face charges in Bannock County related to the credit union robbery once his charges connected to Friday’s chase incident are adjudicated in Bonneville County.
