POCATELLO — Lester Stewart did not like what he saw on the court Tuesday.

Century’s coach watched from the sideline as his team came out flat in a 70-45 home loss to Idaho Falls. The Diamondbacks (1-9, 0-2 4A District 5-6) were outscored 36-14 in the first half, including 17-2 in the second frame.

“I don’t think we were all energetic through that game,” Stewart said. “I think we had our spurts. We played with energy at times.”

Century was outscored in three of four quarters and shot 29 percent from the field. After a 3-of-9 shooting performance in the first eight minutes, the Diamondbacks converted one of 12 shots in the second quarter. Idaho Falls shot 7 of 11 in the second.

“We were missing easy stuff,” Stewart said. “We were missing shots around the basket. That is out of character for us. We couldn’t make any shots.”

After trailing 5-4 with 5 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Idaho Falls took a 7-5 lead 18 seconds later and did not relinquish its advantage for the rest of the game. The Tigers led by double digits for 23 minutes, much of which can be credited to their hot shooting.

Idaho Falls (5-6, 1-2 4A District 5-6) shot 61 percent from the field, including 63 percent or better in three of four quarters. The Tigers are the second team this season to score more than 60 points against the D-backs.

“We need to defend better. ... This is the first time we have had an effort like that,” Stewart said. “We pride ourselves on defense.”

Idaho Falls’ Cooper Peterson scored a game-high 20 points.

The senior knocked down five 3-pointers, two more than Century had as a team.

“He hit tough shots,” Stewart said of Peterson. “That gave them energy. When you are making shots, it’s easier to play defense.”

With Peterson knocking down shots outside the arc, teammate Sawyer Storms controlled the paint. The 6-foot-6 center scored his 19 points in a variety of ways. The senior stepped out and hit a 3-pointer, used his footwork to fake out defenders for layups and used his height to cleanup missed shots.

Storms finished the night 6 of 14 from the field.

“He is a great player,” Stewart said. “He is one of the better players in the state. We tried to deny him the ball.”

Century’s Tucker Hough was the lone D-back to score double-digit points. The senior guard totaled 10 points, while teammates McKay Ordyna and Connor Haines added seven points apiece. Hough’s three field goals were a team-high, and six D-backs missed four shots or more.

Century’s 45 points is the second-fewest points the squad has scored this season.

“Shots didn’t go in,” Stewart said. “We got the shots we wanted. We attacked. It just didn’t go in.”
