POCATELLO — The committee planning the second annual Pocatello Veterans Day Parade has announced its parade marshal.

Retired Army Col. Craig Nickisch has been nominated to be the parade marshal for this year’s event, which kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, on South First Avenue between East Halliday and East Center streets.

Nickisch was born and raised in South Dakota and attended South Dakota State University, also studying as a Fulbright Scholar at the universities of Munich and Erlangen in Germany.

After earning his master’s degree at Northwestern University, he entered the Army as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Nickisch first served in Germany in a tank battalion, and later commanded a parachute cavalry unit. He served in Vietnam from 1967-68 in the first infantry division. His final Army assignment was teaching foreign languages and linguistics at the United States Military Academy.

“His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medals, Air Medals and the Army Commendation Medal,” the parade committee said in a news release. “His foreign awards include the Federal German Cross of Merit and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.”

When Colonel Nickisch retired from the Army, he accepted a professorship at Idaho State University. At ISU, he was recognized as a master teacher, as an outstanding researcher and for outstanding public service

After retiring from ISU, Nickisch remained active in community service. He was a founding member of the Military Science Chapter of the ISU Alumni Association and his work with the Pocatello Rotary Club has taken him on welfare projects to Venezuela and Peru, the news release said. He currently serves on the state’s commissioning committee for the new nuclear submarine, the USS Idaho.

The Pocatello Veterans Day Parade will also feature World War II deputy parade marshals, the committee said in the news release.

“Any World War II veteran who would like to participate in the parade as a deputy parade marshal should arrive at 10 a.m. on East Lewis Street and South First Avenue,” the news release said. “A wheelchair-accessible van will proudly carry these heroes and family members who would like to join them along the parade route and to its conclusion at the north side of the parking lot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints church on South Seventh Street.”

From the starting point on South First Avenue the parade will travel north on South First. At East Center Street it will take a right and continue east to South 10th Avenue where it will make another right and continue south to East Lewis Street. Once the parade hits East Lewis it will make another right and continue west until reaching South Seventh Avenue, where the parade will end.

Additionally, two A-10 “Warthogs,” known for their close air support capabilities, will conduct a flyover at 11 a.m. to kick off the parade and celebrations.

“To encourage public awareness and safety, the Idaho National Guard Public Affairs office has issued the following statement: “The Idaho Army National Guard will move military equipment to support the Pocatello Veterans Day parade on Pocatello and Bannock County roads Saturday, Nov. 4.”

And to extend the reach of the parade to those who are unable to attend in person, the event will also be live-streamed by a group of volunteers from the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Training at Idaho State University.
