The bombs keep on falling as Israel wreaks death and destruction with its military siege upon the Gaza Strip. Photos reveal entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble as the Palestinian death toll mounts into the thousands, the majority being women and children. The bombing has produced destruction reminiscent of the leveling of Hiroshima. The cumulative force of Israel’s bombs directed at Gaza reportedly has exceeded the impact from that atomic blast. Israel claims all of its bombs are targeting thousands and thousands of military targets — what the world is actually witnessing is genocide.
Israel’s leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, maintains his country is conducting a military operation to root out Hamas and rescue hostages. The retaliation is Israel’s response to the Hamas attack that occurred on October 7th wherein 1,400 Israeli and foreign citizens were murdered with over 200 hundred taken hostage. At the time of writing this column only one hostage has been rescued as a result of Israel invading Gaza, while thousands of people have been killed. Netanyahu points to that singular rescue as a benefit produced by the invasion — that’s a pitiful statistic for claiming success.
As the humanitarian crisis mounts, protests at Israel’s action have erupted worldwide with calls for an immediate ceasefire coming from many sources including the United Nations and Doctors Without Borders. We are not talking about a death here or there —untold thousands of additional casualties will result until the siege ends and most will be Palestinian civilians caught in the crossfire. Expect far more hostages to die than will ever be saved by the current military strategy of virtual carpet bombing. It’s not confirmed, but reports from Gaza are that many hostages have already been killed by the relentless bombing.
America’s response through the Biden Administration has been to stand tall with Israel. Our government states Israel has a right to defend itself, and the United States has moved aircraft carriers into the region as a warning to Iran and other countries not to intervene. The Arab world is seeing this massacre while we give Israel lip service to exercise caution for the civilians trapped in Gaza. Supplying Israel with arms to blow Gaza to smithereens while Biden allocates funds for the expanding humanitarian crisis of the Palestinians is an idiotic policy.
Our country gives Israel 3.8 billion dollars a year to help sustain its existence. We also provide Israel with some of the world’s most devastating military equipment. This aid is provided annually while Israel continues to expand settlements and restricts the rights of Palestinians under its apartheid system.
Between 400 to 600 Palestinian villages were destroyed at the beginning of the Zionist expulsion 75 years ago in the Nakba (Arabic for catastrophe), and Israel continues building settlements in the West Bank. What happened on October 7th was horrible, but Israel does not have clean hands given its decades long continuing mistreatment of the Palestinians.
The question of whether Israel has a right to exist is a non-starter. That ship sailed a long time ago, but Israel needs to focus upon reaching a humanitarian settlement with the Palestinians. Finding accord will require Herculean effort, but endless cycles of death and violence are the alternative. The United States should leverage its financial and military aid policies with Israel to push for a peaceful solution.
