POCATELLO — The Monster Truck Grand Nationals 2018 will be at the Holt Arena in Pocatello on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Monster truck driver Larry Quick continued his winning ways throughout the NO LIMITS Monster Truck Series and is planning on leaving Pocatello on Saturday night with a victory in the Grand National Monster Truck Championship.

The victory last year was Quick’s fifth championship in years — and his third win in the last 10 events.

Quick will look to carry his momentum into the Holt Arena on Saturday, where other hungry drivers, including Bigfoot driver Larry Swim who is a three-time winner of the crown. Swim won it on a much different track.

“The track drawings look like a Ghost Ryder style,” Swim said. “Plus, now they have Dragon Slayer coming. Bigfoot and I am ready for the challenge but not sure how crazy we must get to hit these bus stacks wide open.”

Just added to the list of hot shoes is Kreg Christensen from Utah, who is noted for his aggressive driver’s style.

“We knew controversy would follow Kreg and his Dragon Slayer Humvee truck, and it has showed up this week already,” said Ed Beckley of Worldwide Checkered Flag Promotions, LLC. “Just the way these other guys have run this year and now they’re jacked up everywhere they go to. If you look at what is Swim’s worst track, might be where everyone like Quick and Christensen get crazy on the edge and it’s a win — that’s pretty scary but really great for the spectators.”

The Ghost Ryder, Bigfoot and Dragon Slayer trucks better not forget about the rest of the trucks in the competition.

They will all compete in three challenges: the “Wheelie Contest” (where the rear bumpers drag), “Racing” and “Freestyle Competition” (drivers get three minutes each truck to perform whatever crazy wild maneuver to try to win the crowd response and the win). The overall winner will be awarded the 6-foot-tall trophy and get to carry the bragging rights of being the No Limits Monster Truck Grand National Champion.

Track crews get started hauling the $30,000 in dirt to the Holt Arena for this huge event that includes more than monster trucks. There is a fire-breathing 30-foot-tall robotic dragon that bites the tops off cars, also a demo derby for cars, bump to pass tuff truck races, lawn mower and kids power wheels races for locals.

“We strive to have family entertainment, so we add these different parts to the event to make it a show,” Beckley said. “Also this year, we have face painters and balloon artists free for the kids.”

The Grand Nationals begin with opening the doors to ride trucks, Kid’s Zone and an VIP ticket-holder pit party where those ticket holders come down on the floor and get photos taken with the trucks and drivers prior to the show.

“At 7 p.m., the Christian Motorcyclist Association will help start the opening ceremonies,” said Beckley. “Two and half hours later, we will have a new champ, and history will have been made.”
