As the temperatures start rising this summer, Idaho State University offers evenings on the quad listening to concerts on Thursday nights, followed by movies in the air conditioned Bengal Theater on Friday nights. All are welcome to attend.

The Aaron Ball Band is featured for this Thursday’s Concert on the Quad at 7 p.m., with opener Almost Famous at 6 p.m. Aaron Ball has great vocal range and songwriting ability, with music that ranges from funny and humorous, to pop and country, to dark and angry rock, while Almost Famous is a country rock trio whose diverse sounds make for an enjoyable listen.

“American Folk” is the movie this Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Bengal Theater.

Called, “’Once’ on a road trip,” two strangers, both musicians, are grounded in California in the aftermath of 9/11 and embark on a hopeful, cross-country musical journey, meeting the people of America in a time of crisis. Hollywood Reporter calls it a “Heartfelt homage to American Folk Music,” while Variety calls it a “Timeless classic.” (Rated PG-13) Admission is $3 for the public, $2 for ISU staff, or free for ISU students with Bengal ID. Then Jedd Greenhalgh performs at 7 p.m. this Thursday, July 12, at the Concert on the Quad, with the opener being the ISU Summer Marching Band at 6 p.m. Greenhalgh is a violinist who uses a synthetic sound machine to create original compositions played in the background as he plays the violin. He also can play the cello, piano, bass drum, and is a DJ. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served while supplies last. Food is free for ISU summer students and $3 for the public.

“A Quiet Place” is the movie on Friday, July 13, at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Bengal Theater. The acclaimed story stars Emily Blunt and John Krasinski in a tale of a post apocalyptic family who survives an alien invasion by being very silent in all aspects of their lives. Oskar and Julia are the headliners for the Concert on the Quad at 7 p.m. on July 19, with opener Austin Coleman at 6 p.m. Oskar and Julia are a saucy, acoustic experience with harmonies reminiscent of how good music used to be. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served while supplies last. Food is free for ISU summer students and $3 for the public.

Heartland Film Festival winner “Lean on Pete” will be shown on July 20 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Bengal Theater. Based on the best selling novel, Charley Thompson struggles to find his place in the world until he begins working for a race horse owner and he meets thoroughbred Lean on Pete. But when the owner decides to sell Pete. Charley takes the horse and goes on a cross country excursion to find a place for them both. The Chicago Sun-Times writes, “It’s hard to imagine anyone watching ‘Lean on Pete’ and not rooting hard for Charley’s wish to come true...a quiet gem.” Admission is $3 for the public, $2 for ISU staff, or free for ISU students with Bengal ID. And Palm Springs Film Festival winner “Finding Your Feet” will play on July 27, at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Bengal Theater. When Lady Abbot discovers that her husband of forty years is having an affair with her best friend, she seeks refuge in London with her estranged older sister, whose carefree lifestyle takes her on a journey to find her feet, both literally through dancing, and figuratively to rediscover her purpose in life. “A frisky charmer of a movie, with a stunning final image that will leave you cheering,” writes The Times UK.
