REXBURG — President Dallin H. Oaks of the first presidency of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles recently spoke at a Brigham Young University-Idaho devotional.

President Oaks addressed the topic of love and law to around 15,000 students in addition to faculty members at the BYU-Idaho center. Oaks said that “finding an appropriate balance, we can live the principles in a deeper, more complete way.”

He continued to talk about the way the church is able to balance the coin of love and law. Oaks said that the church teaches about the commandments of God and must apply its practices. At the same time, he said the church must also teach and practice love.

Oaks gives examples of loving practices including the church’s humanitarian contributions to various people regardless of it’s religious beliefs. One of those included the generous support of tithing funds that benefit the church’s education system students.

“You students in the church education system are the recipients of the church’s generous support of education,” he said.

Oaks also noted the recent changes from home teaching and ministering as another result of the church’s encouraging love and service.

He invited the students of the church to reach out in love to all people.

“We must not only keep the commandments but also be examples of civility in our own circles of love and beyond,” President Oaks said. “We should reach out in approval and love to recognize the good in all people.”

In attendance at the event were President of BYU-Idaho, Henry J. Eyring and former president of BYU-Idaho and general authority of the church, Kim B. Clark.
