The first blind athlete to compete in the history of the World Wake Association hit the waters in Caldwell this weekend alongside contest veterans and other first-time participants in the Malibu WWA Rider Experience West.

Idaho Watersports hosted the event July 6-8 at Broadside Harbor Ski Lakes in Caldwell.

Scott Leason broke wake history as the first blind competitor to compete in a WWA contest. Leason earned his first-place finish with a score of 80.00 in the Adaptive Standing division. In addition to wakeboarding, Leason is also a champion blind surfer, water-skier, and Ironman competitor in the U.S.

“We had an amazing weekend for our first time in Boise, Idaho, and are excited about all the new faces and families we were able to share the weekend with,” WWA Executive Director Corrie Wilson said in a press release. “We saw an incredible field of amateurs, paired with many firsts and lots of smiles that lasted all weekend long.”

Jr. Pro Men’s rider Luca Kidd of Great Britain took his third Jr. Pro win of the year with a final score of 83.33, followed by Kevin Duffy (USA) in second place with 77.67 points and Jake Hill (USA) in third with 68.33 points.

Elle Christensen (USA) and Zoe Luquette (USA) put on a show for the crowd in the battle for the Junior Women division gold. Christensen took the win a score of 86.67. Luquette landed in second place with 70.00 points.

Surfgate Sunday provided riders and families time to enjoy the water. New surfers were coached by Malibu Pro riders along with some local shredders who dialed in some big tricks.

The Malibu WWA Rider Experience heads north to Detroit July 14-16 for the fourth stop of the rider development series.
