REXBURG — Lindsey Stirling and David Archuleta will headline the Winter 2018 Semester’s Center Stage Performing Arts Series at Brigham Young University-Idaho in Rexburg. Stirling, a popular violinist, dancer and artist, will perform Jan. 19, and pop singer Archuleta will perform Feb. 23 in the Hart Auditorium.

Matthew Kacergis

• Jan. 17, 7:30 p.m., Barrus Concert Hall

Singer Matthew Kacergis will perform “The Songs of the Cinema: From Casablanca to La La Land.” Kacergis recently played the role of Prince Eric in the national tour of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” to critical acclaim. A native of Seattle, he received his theater training at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Boston Conservatory.

Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey Stirling remains fearless enough to always dream big. In four years since the release of her 2012 self-titled debut, the electronic music impresario, classically trained violinist, dancer, and artist quietly and humbly became one of the 21st century’s most innovative stars by clinging to her groundbreaking vision of cinematic violin-driven electronic music.

Comedy Improv Night

You have to see this show to believe it. Improvised music, comedy, scenes, the works. If you’ve seen Whose Line Is It Anyway? you have an idea of what kind of hilarious, energetic comedy the improv team will perform. The show features Kirby Heyborne (The RM, The Best Two Years), Corbin Allred (Saints and Soldiers, Christmas Mission), Lincoln Hoppe (Singles Ward, The RM), and Kelly Lohman.

Barbershop Music Festival, featuring Instant Classic

• Feb. 10, 6 and 8:30 p.m., Barrus Concert Hall

The award-winning quartet Instant Classic will headline this year’s Barbershop Music Festival at BYU-Idaho. Instant Classic won the International Barbershop Quartet Contest in 2015. They perform a variety of music from several decades and styles, including vocal jazz, musical theater, pop, and even R&B. You will also hear the BYU-Idaho Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir, student quartets and the Carousel Chorus.

David Archuleta

• Feb. 23, 7:30 p.m., Hart Auditorium

After being featured in the sold-out 2016 Christmas concert at BYU-Idaho, David Archuleta will return to campus with a concert of his very own. Since becoming a star when he was just 16, David has created a successful music career for himself. The young Utahn signed with Jive Records and his first single “Crush” became an instant hit. He has released several albums, including David Archuleta, Christmas from the Heart, David Archuleta – Glad Christmas Tidings (the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s holiday album), Forevermore, Begin and No Matter How Far. In 2012, David put his singing career on hiatus so he could volunteer for a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Santiago, Chile. He returned from Chile in March 2014, eager to perform and record once again. Since his return he’s traveled to the Middle East to perform for U.S. troops, recorded the song “Glorious” for the Meet the Mormons movie, and been busy writing songs for a new album.

Wu Man and the Huayin Shadow Puppet Band

• March 2, 7:30 p.m., Kirkham Auditorium

Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man joins with the brilliant Huayin Shadow Puppet Band for an evening of old-time traditional music and shadow puppetry. Amid shouts and the strumming of lutes and fiddles, the percussion of clappers and the ringing of gongs, the band sings and plays about rural life in remote China, painting an aural picture of places and sounds rarely heard in the West. Equally at home in a variety of settings, Wu Man is a principal musician with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and has also recorded music for the soundtrack of the DreamWorks Animation film, Kung Fu Panda 3.

Winter Jazz Fest featuring Benny Green

• March 10, 7:30 p.m., Hart Auditorium

Benny Green possesses the history of jazz at his fingertips. Combine mastery of keyboard technique with decades of real-world experience playing with no one less than the most celebrated artists of the last half century, and it’s no wonder Green has been hailed as perhaps the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist to ever emerge from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Green will headline this year’s Winter Jazz Festival. Backing up Green will be the BYU-Idaho Sound Alliance jazz ensemble under the direction of Mark Watkins. More information about the Winter Jazz Fest, clinics, workshops and performances will be made available as the event draws near.

Jasper String Quartet

• March 22, 7:30 p.m., Barrus Concert Hall

Winners of the prestigious Chamber Music America (CMA) Cleveland Quartet Award, Philadelphia’s Jasper String Quartet is the Professional Quartet in Residence at Temple University’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians and the 2017-18 Guest Artist in Residence at Swarthmore College. The Jasper String Quartet is named after Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. The quartet will perform Beethoven Quartet in G Major, Op. 18, No. 2; Shostakovich Quartet No. 9; and Mendelssohn Quartet in E minor, Op. 44, No. 2.
