The Bingham County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about the potential of West Nile Virus in local mosquitoes.

The Bingham County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to residents to be mindful of the West Nile Virus.

According to a Bingham County news release, the West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans and other animals by infected mosquitoes. Infection can cause illness in any person, especially people ages 50 and older and people with preexisting conditions.

Residents are encouraged to wear insect repellent that contain DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Each of these are EPA-approved repellents. 

The sheriff's office also warned residents to avoid standing water as this is where mosquitos like to breed. They should also cover their skin between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
