Sean Kane didn’t make a big deal of it.

But when Century took care of business against Mountain View on March 14, Kane quietly crossed a milestone that few coaches in any sport reach — career win No. 300.

“It was a great opening weekend in Boise for the team,” Kane said. “I was really proud of our team.”

The Diamondbacks opened the season by going 3-0 over the weekend at Mountain View High School in Meridian, knocking off perennial 4A powerhouse Fruitland (10-2) and a pair of 6A programs in Rocky Mountain (9-3) and Mountain View (7-5), then closed out the road trip with a 10-2 victory at Burley on Monday.

Several Diamondbacks were unbeaten across all four matches. Tiden Lynn won all three of his singles matches without dropping a set. Liam McGee and Nate Romriell were equally dominant in doubles, each going 4-0 across boys and mixed doubles pairings. Kate Spicer matched that mark on the girls side, opening with a 6-0, 6-0 singles win over Rocky Mountain and contributing to doubles victories in each of the remaining three matches.

Shep Butler had the most complete weekend on the roster, sweeping all three of his events — boys singles, boys doubles and mixed doubles.

On the girls side, a pair of freshmen had memorable debuts. Lana Romriell and Claire Frost went 3-1 together in girls doubles, with their only loss a hard-fought super tiebreak (10-8) against Mountain View’s Calliopi Goodman and Evelyn McHargue.

“Playing against that level of competition provided a great test,” Kane said.
