POCATELLO — The cheers dissipated with each inning that passed.

Blackfoot’s shouting lost its luster as the zeros filled the scoreboard. All the excitement was on the other side of the field. Pocatello had the energy and began pulling away from its opponent. The Broncos’ applauding briefly returned in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was short lived.

Kolmon Farnsworth closed the door on Blackfoot’s final opportunity, and Pocatello beat Blackfoot 9-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Halliwell Park.

Farnsworth threw five pitches in relief to get the game’s final out, spurning the Broncos’ bases-loaded opportunity with two outs in the final frame. It capped an all-around performance in game one from the infielder. Farnsworth finished the game 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He added a strikeout on the mound and one putout and two assists in the field.

“He makes us a lot better,” Pocatello coach Mark Davie said. “He’s a great third baseman. His bat is strong, and he gives the whole team confidence when he is there.”

Farnsworth put the Razorbacks up 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning after his double scored Ian Norby. Farnsworth found his way home later in the frame on a sacrifice fly from Nick McAdam, putting the Razorbacks up 3-0.

Farnsworth broke the game open with a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the Razorbacks ahead 7-0. An error by Blackfoot right fielder Isiah Thomas allowed two of the three runs to score.

Pocatello finished the game-one win with 10 hits. The Razorbacks had 24 at-bats and no one struck out. Pocatello’s Peyton Cleaves had two hits, while McAdam had a pair of RBIs.

“It was nice to see them come out and hit the baseball,” Davie said.

The Razorbacks’ pitching staff matched their bats in game one, as the team’s four pitchers held Blackfoot to three hits while striking out eight batters.

Nate Manning got the start, pitching five innings to earn the win. He struck out six, walked three and allowed three hits after 87 pitches.

Jax Christensen, Trei Hough and Farnsworth combined to throw the final two innings.

“Nate Manning pitched outstanding,” Davie said. “I wanted to finish the game with him, but I’m really happy with how he pitched.”

“It’s nice when you don’t have to use your top guys,” Davie added. “It’s good to see the runs down to zero.”

Game two wasn’t as easy for Pocatello (22-8, 8-0 Area C), which needed a late-inning rally to earn a 14-8 win.

The Razorbacks scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after trailing 8-4. Kai Sluder started the Razorbacks’ rally with an RBI triple, and teammate Austin Losser tied the game at 8 with a two-RBI single. Losser later scored to put the Razorbacks ahead 9-8.

Nine of the 10 runs Pocatello scored in the frame came with two outs. Sluder had four RBIs in the fifth.

The Razorbacks finished game two with 11 hits, including a team-high three from Losser. He also added four RBIs.

Blackfoot led 5-0 after two innings, but inconsistent pitching doomed the Broncos. Siler Serr allowed eight earned runs and J-Rod Gough surrendered six earned runs. Chase Turner led the team with three hits.

Pocatello finishes the season with eight league games and one non-league game before the start of the district tournament.

“My expectations were to be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed at districts,” Davie said. “We can do that, I know we can.”
