The murkily titled Fox News op-ed piece by Rep. Raul Labrador on May 19 ("Immigration Reform Starts With Us Enforcing Its Own Laws") is typical of the muddled thinking of this legislator who thinks emergency rooms are the answer for people unable to buy health insurance. We never quite find out what is in the legislation Labrador is proposing. Instead we are given anecdotal vignettes of immigrant crime and are assured that his legislation, whatever it is, will solve these problems. Meanwhile, the American Immigration Council released a report this week showing that immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens. There are certainly more critical American issues for Labrador to focus on, but perhaps he seeks presidential favor for his bid to become governor of Idaho.
